Trouble with uploaded file

Hi, vBulletin newbie here
I have bought the software, found webspace and uploaded my files
Yet when I click on the 'Forum' file I get an error message, that is I am not taken to see the sub-files and folders

I can see all the files with the FTP program, I just cannot see the files when I go to www.<fakeName>.com/forum

So I have deleted the files and folders, and uploaded them one by one.
All is fine until I upload the file 'index.php' then I suddenly cannot see the uploaded files any more

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I am going wrong?
