Cookie settings for 2 forums @ 1 domain

I read the manual but it comes with a big warning about not being able to log in if I get this wrong, so some clarification would be appreciated.

I want to temporarily run 2 forums while I upgrade, both will be on the same domain.

How do I set the cookies so that I can stay logged into both.

Forum #1 will be in public_html/forum

Forum #2 will be in public_html/newforum

Don't use the cookie path and domain settings for this. Use the cookie prefix settings in your config.php files instead.

OK, so if I change the prefix from the default of bb on one of the forums then I set cookies with unique names. That makes sense.

Will it cause a problem to change this on an active forum ?

I'll obviously close the board and then make the change. But then when everyone logs back in won't they have lost their last activity cookie along with the rest ?

I'd leave the active forum alone and make the cookie prefix change on the test forum.
