You can select 'Add New Template' from the dropdown menu behind a Style in the Style Manager.

Ok I have a question and I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. I have gone in and created a new template, I simply copied the contents of my header file and pasted it in and gave it a new name. I named in testheader.

However, when I replace the $header code in one of my templates with $testheader, it does not call it, just leaves that space blank.

The help button in the admin panel says this:

TitleEnter the name of your template here. This will become the name of how the template is referenced by the system. This will be prefilled if you are editing an existing template. Please note: When adding custom templates, in order to have them parsed, you must also write PHP code to call them.

Ok so I know that i am missing a step, but I can't figure out what exactly that next step is. Where do I write this PHP code to call this template so it will be parsed? What am I missing?

For example, let's say that I have a new template named "testheader" and I want it to call from the template called FORUMDISPLAY.

How would I go about getting the testheader to display?

In a PHP-script (either one of the vBulletin main scripts, or a Plugin), php code is executed to evaluate/parse the template into a variable. This variable can then be placed inside other templates, which in their turn get evaluated somewhere in the code. The final result is a complete set of HTML code that make up the page, and it is printed out.

Since this require custom coding, i suggest you have a look at our coding community at vbulletin.org. Have a read in the How-To sections, have a look how other plugins are made. Feel free to ask there if something is not clear.

PS You could demonstrate the system, by creating a new Plugin (AdminCP->Plugin System->Plugin Manager->Add New Plugin) for the Hook Location: forumdisplay_start

Then add the following code to the plugin (not tested):

global $testheader;
eval('$testheader = "' . fetch_template('testheader') . '";'); 

Then place $testheader somewhere in your FORUMDISPLAY template.

Thank you I actually had done this but I wasn't sure if it was right so I didn't post it. I had mine coded a little differently so I changed it to model yours and it still didn't work. I'm stumped.

I went ahead and posted on vb.org, hopefully I van get this figured out.

I even went through the VB owner's manual documention. I found the section that says "Add or Edit Templates" but it only tells you how to edit a template, it doesn't go into adding a new one.

I just did test the above code (i didn't at first) and it is working fine for me. Make sure you put $testheader in the body part of FORUMDISPLAY and that your Plugin is enabled.

OK looks like it works fine, except where I am trying to put it. I will have to contact them and see what the story is (CMPS through VBAdvanced)

With this plugin code, will that only work on the template you define in the code? I need a custom template-converted-to-variable that goes accross my whole site.

Is there a way to do this or am I going to have to create a new plugin for each and every page I need it for?
