I'm not sure you can do this, but I'm positive I won't articulate it well. 
I have a couple of users that would like it if any forum, thread or post that they haven't read has the "new posts-style" icon (i.e. an orange one) until they've actually read it, rather than have vBulletin reset everything after X amount of time (which is currently 900 seconds).
