What are "Search Relevance Rating/Reply Functions" ?

Here are the definitions :

Search Relevance Reply Function
"Allows you to specify a function to operate on the number of replies of a thread."

Search Relevance Rating Function
"Allows you to specify a function to operate on the average rating of a thread."

But, I do not understand to where it applies, and what is its purpose :

1) to search results ?
Then why wanting to change the number of replies ?
And why is there a function to operate on the rating, as rates aren't displayed on a search result ?

2) to something else ?
Then why the name says "Search Relevance" ?

They apply to the option 'Sort results by relevancy' when you go to the search page. It attempts to sort topics based on how relevant they are to your search term.

You can write a function to translate the data differently -- I believe the default ("none") simply returns the value sent to it.

Oh, another small question to help me about the translation :
"replacement_variable"

Do you mean :
1) a variable to replace things
2) a thing to replace variables


I was confused, because when creating one for a test, you do not see any variable name.

Probably a variable (ie, you can set it to what you want) to replace something.

I can't recall : I never had vB2. I just have been given admin permissions recently by Sophocle (vbulletin-fr.com) in order to debug and translate vB3.
But when the translation is finished, I will maybee think about purchasing a license, in order to run a fan site dedicaced to Ed Sullivan.
