What do you do when you have a huge database that takes very long to backup?

Are your attachments, avatars, and profile pics in the database? If yes, move them to the file system.

Always backup via SSH/Telenet, and you may wish to consider closing your site while you backup to prevent any errors caused by users posting or registering while the backup is taking place.
