Issue with permissions and groups.

I've a perplexing issue (for me at least!) with permissions and groups, that I don't understand. Yes, I've even examined the help file to see if that clarifies stuff.

I have a forum that's restricted to certain users. There is a group designated for users who need to view the forum. This group has permission to see/post on the forum. Users have this group added as a secondary group, so they can view the forum. Normal users do not have permission to see this forum, it's explicitly denied.

The issue is, they don't appear to be able to see the forum. Now, I'm not sure why - can anyone enlighten me as to why this might not work?

In their Primary usergroup, is the option "Allow Users to have Member Groups" set to 'Yes'?
(Sets whether or not permissions from the user's member (secondary) user group memberships are inherited or not)
