HOW DO I: Clean out the attachments table?

I currently have an attachment table thats 1 gig. I'm running 3.0 right now and my attachments haven't been working for months now (even when i had 2.x). I've pretty much narrowed it down to that my attachment table has gotten too big. Whats the safest way to clean out the attachment table? If I do so, will my avatars still remain intact (assuming those are stored in a diff. table)? Thanks

First of all, what exactly is wrong with your attachments?
