Moderating New Members with 'reason to join'?

We were having some trouble with lots of trolls joining our board, so we decided to enable our option to MODERATE NEW MEMBERS, but that doesn't prevent us from really knowing which future members are going to start trouble and which ones, aren't.

Despite that being IMPOSSIBLE to fully predict, we would like to be able to compare new members' profiles by having them fill out a new option when they sign up that asks them:

WHY DO YOU WANT TO JOIN OUR BOARD?

The administrator would then be able to see their responses and decide which new members to let in or not (the more serious-minded people would respond to the new query and get in asap, etc...)

Any way to do this? (or other suggestions otherwise)

    Thanks.

I do that on my forums.

You can create a new profile field in your Admin CP -> User Profile Fields -> Add. Make the field required and new users will have to fill it in when they signup.

Thanks. I actually thought about that, but then everyone else would get to see it too, no? Or can you keep that form private?

Enable the Field hidden on Profile option for the field.

Hmmmmmm, seems like we've run into a bug, perhaps? Since we added this new field and make it mandatory for all NEW MEMBERS, all CURRENT members who want to EDIT their profiles are also being asked to complete it, which doesn't make any sense because we're asking them WHY they want to join our board.

            Any solutions?

if you set it to mandotory, it needs to be filled in regardless

I understand that, but that's my question.

Isn't there any way around this for current members? The members that are on the board already are ALREADY on-board...the mandatory query is for those who want to join the board for the first time...
