    Two forums, one database

    Hi guys,

I have a client who would like to possibly set up a second set of the vBulletin PHP files, but have them use the same database. The trick is that he wants it to look different on the second set.

So, you would go to one installation and see all the same data, but it looks different. You go to the other installation, same data, but it has its own template. Two forums, one database.

The problem I see is that because all templates are database driven, I don't think I'd be able to set up a different default template for one set of files without having that change also take effect as the default template on the other.

Does anyone have any input on this?

For the vBulletin guys: If you don't think this thread is appropriately placed, please move it. Second, yes, I will be insisting on a second license being bought for the second set of files.

You can't have two copies of hte same license running at the same time accessible to the public. You'll violated your li

You can make new styles and templates and have it availalbe as a chosen style for your users to use. Doesnt have to be default. Whatever they choose (you can have their styles be chosen when they sign up), will be their "default", until they decide to choose another style for their browsing pleasure.

I know users can choose their styles, but we want it defaulted. We don't want to have to depend on the user choosing the appropriate style.

I'll check the license, you may be right, but it wouldn't make much sense seeing as it basically a second forum with a second license. I don't see how where the data comes from is a big deal.

Why dont you create a another style and then include the style in the target arguement? I think this does overide the default template.

            Using Vbulletin.org as example.

Try clicking on all these links.

This is a discussion forum powered by vBulletin. To find out about vBulletin, go to http://www.vbulletin.com/ .

They have created style 1, 4 and 5

What you could do is provide a link with different colour and it leads to the theme OR you dont give them the choice to choose.

            DARK BLUE

            PURPLE

            GREEN

I'll be damed. Didn't know you could append a style attribute to the URL like that.

              Thanks for your help.

Not a problem mate. Few things to note though.

What if in the profile, the registered users have a preferred template to use? You might want to remove the column to change the template.

Your idea of have 2 instance of Vbulletin connecting to the same database will not work since all the templates are stored on the database. Basically, what you have done is created a backup copy of your Vbulletin.

I know, but my client has an idea in this regard, and I'm just trying to see if there's a way to make it work. If I can, great. If not, I'll tell him so.

Anyway, good luck to your client. I guess the template manipulation will solve his problem Thats is one of the great features of Vbulletin.

                      Question.

I specified the styleid in the URL and it worked fine for the new setup. Problem was that I went back to the normal, "live" setup and now it looked default!

I figured out that what it was doing was seeing the specified style in the URL and modifying my own profile to that style. So, wherever I visit a forum using the same database, if the template is user selectable, I see this default style.

Is there any way to NOT save the style defintion in the profile, this way I can visit one set of files and it looks one way, go back to the "live" forum and it looks as it should? Or is this just the way vBulletin does its business?

Solution for what? Multiple boards on one database?

If so, that would be extremely hard to do, as you would have to edit ALL the vB PHP Files and change all the table names.

                              No, not that

A client would like to integrate my forum into his site. That should be easy. Now the problem: he would like to present the forum in "his" design. The problem is, that i am using already different templateseta, which are assigned to my different forums - and I would need to assign a secon templateset to each forum...

I hope the problem got clearer now
