For many reasons it has taken me a long time to prep a migration from 2.0.1 to 2.0.3. (I had a lot of custom code, hacks, templates to adjust.) I've had dual sites running for past few months or so, 2.0.1 being my "live site" and 2.0.3 being my test site. My "main" site has never really been formally opened, but still there are several hundred threads and maybe 20 users that I want to preserve from my current live site, and transfer them to 2.0.3 testsite where I have already integrated all of my template changes. So 2.0.3 is good to go... after I pull the threads & stuff into it.
But I don't know how to do this stuff but a friend is helping me, and he is Oracle literate but not at all familiar with vB, PHP or mySQL. Here's what he recommended to me:
Is this the way to go? If so, can someone provide me instructions, or a link to the procedure if it is already spelled out elsewhere?
Thank you.

When the time comes for the switch, I think the ideal solution would be to
copy appropriate database tables (like users/passwords, postings if
appropriate, etc.) from the live site (2.0.1) to the new site 2.0.3,
and then test the new site one final time. [You would *not*, of course,
want to copy the templates from the old DB to the new one!] Then just
rename the folders on the web server so that the new site becomes the
'live' site, and the old site just hides in the background (as a backup,
at least for a while).
Only problem is that I don't know how to selectively copy a subset of mySQL
tables from one DB to the other, nor do I know which tables are the ones
that really ought to be copied. Maybe you can find some info on this in the
vB forums, since this seems like a common enough thing for people to want to
do.
