2.9 and register globals

question re: register globals on and vb 2.9
we have an old site running 2.9 and we know we must upgrade, but the site does not run properly with RH enterprise and Apache 2 without register globals on (if you try to post or reply - it waits for about 2 minutes before posting the message).

we have installed the latest functions.php in 2.2.9 but is there any way short of updating to protect 2.2.9 better from hackers by changing/manipulating some code so that we can turn register globals off?

2.2.9 has multiple security issues, so you'll want to upgrade anyhow.
