help Please!! I've been suspended

How do all..

Apparently My provider says we have way too many connections open on the MySQL server at once and that some never get closed and just hang.. So they shut our website down..

I am not sure of our exact daily hit count but we usually have 50-60 users on average connected and doing something..

They say no application should need to use more than 90 connections(which is the current setting for mysql), Unfortunately this is a MySql shared box..

Should we be using the mysql_pconnect or mysql_connect? If using mysql_connect do we need a close connection statement somewhere..

Any help or suggestions would be appretiated.. I am at a loss.. :(

So you are using a shared server which is set to 90 connections max, while you are using 50-60 just yourself? That leaves 30-40 for all of the other users of your shared server. Your ISP needs to bump the connections up on that server but you are getting to the limit of what most virtual hosts will allow in terms of database usage so it may be time to go dedicated.

That would be difficult to do since the majority of his site visitors are guest users....

I would have to agree here, for the amount of volume of users your boards are getting, you might want to start looking at getting a dedicated machine.

Thanks to ALL

how do all..

Thanks for jumpin in right away folks, much appreciated.. Well I was able to talk them into re-opening us up.. Their connections are set to 100 now..

When I am logged in via telnet I run the show status command and it tells me there are 5 running threads, then I run the show processlist command and I only see 3-6 processes at a time but my front page says I have about 50+ users viewing the board.. Is this a good thing?

The provider also upgraded us to php 4 with zend.. That helps with performance but I am sure it wont have anything to do with connections..

I also found some code in our header that was making 2 more extra connect commands to the db and I am wondering if this was part of our problem as well..

Anyways I am rambling...

A shared server is in our near future I do believe.. It would be so nice to have full control over our sql server.. :)

Thanks again all

Are you sure they were not just trying to lose your account. You are not exactly what most hosts are looking for content wise.

While being a little less efficient, the host won't get on you for having 60+ connections open at once this way :D

Open admin/db_mysql.php, replace all instances of
mysql_pconnect
with
mysql_connect

Herb,

Talk to Annette or Stephanie at http://www.hostmatters.com about hosting your site with them. They have several vBulletin boards, including their own and mine, and don't seem to care.
