    MySQL server has gone away

This is a server error, and you should contact your host.

Ask your host to increase the max_packet_size and the wait_timeout limit.

Can this be done via PHP values? I'm on shared hosting so they are refusing to make the changes directly to mysql values.

I verified this on the server:

        max_allowed_packet 268435456

        wait_timeout 60

        Anything else I can try?

GoDaddy is likely to be your problem.

Have you tried refreshing the upgrade screen? GoDaddy is notorious for this happening during an upgrade, but if you leave it an hour and then refresh the page, it usually carries on.

Also don't take any notice of hosts claiming their server is set up 'correctly' and blaming the software....

I tried refreshing several times, it always aborts with the error message in the first post. At this point im considering restoring from backup since I can't continue with the upgrade.

Your site appears to be down at this time so I can't even see what's going on.

wait_timeout should be at least 120 seconds. On GoDaddy, it would probably have to be 360 seconds. The default is a value is equivalent to a day.

Upgrade by their nature run some pretty hefty queries and if the limitations on the server prevent them from completing, we can't really work around that. Step 20 is trying to rebuild all your styles.

GoDaddy says they cant change the values because im on shared hosting, so I just restored the site back to the original version. I also changed the URL, so the site now is www.usasoccerforum.com

I dont know how to upgrade at this point especially with GoDaddy unwilling to increase the timeout. Is it possible to delete all the styles I don't want since I have a custom one?

You would have to put your site into debug mode. Then you can delete all the styles under Themes in the AdminCP.

Debug mode is useful for development purposes- it is required if you will be creating VB5 Modifications you intend to distribute for others to download. However it is also useful for trouble-shooting issues with your site as debug mode often provides more specific error messages when something goes wrong- as such if you are

When you upgrade, you will want to delete all the files under /core/install/themes as well.

Sounds good, I will give it a try.

I deleted all the themes as suggested and im still getting the same error message:

MySQL server has gone away on /home/crispinv/public_html/core/vb/db/query/update.php : 120

Forum seems to be operating normally though, and the version on the bottom of my webpage shows 5.2.6

I recommend you to switch to other web hosting. There are much better hosts out there than GoDaddy. I used to be in GoDaddy too so I know what you're going through.

Do you store CSS in the file system? Switch to the database. Then run the upgrade. It should be faster.
