System requirements for upgrading to v5.2.6

I have run the test script to ensure my hosting was ready to upgrade to 5.2.6. It has reported an error and I wanted to know whether this is a new requirement new introduced in 5.2.5 or 5.2.6, or whether it can be ignored - because the system is already running OK (at 5.2.4).

When I ran vb_test.php it reported a fail on MySQL and the details were: "vBulletin requires that the mysql username has create, select, update, insert, delete, alter and drop privledges, contact your host and ask them to adjust these privledges".

As far as I can tell the username has full privileges and the zPanel control panel I use to set up users doesn't allow me to manually set the privileges.

Do you think it's OK for me to proceed with the upgrade?

    Thanks, Adam

If the test file is reporting that issue, it would be worth verifying with your host that all the privileges are set correctly.

Thanks Mark B. I have checked with the hosting tech support guys and they have confirmed that all permissions are granted to the MySQL user - with the exception of the "Grant" permission - but that's not in the list of permissions required. Any suggestions for how I take this forwards now?

If you're currently running 5.2.4 without issue, I cannot see how these privileges could be wrong.

However, being ever the cautious sort, I would suggest creating a test copy of your forum, with its own separate database, and upgrade that first.

Alternatively, if your forum is not huge, then just make sure you have a proper backup the database and files, and run the upgrade. You can always revert back afterwards if needs be.

Could you also please try the attached copy of the vb_test.php file? It's the one I always use and has one or two tweaks compared to older ones.

          Hi Mark,

Thanks, I have tried your version of the vb_test file and that gives a "pass" for each test. I guess that means it's OK to proceed.

As a quick aside, if I set up a copy of the forum, would I have any issues with serial numbers, etc?

          Thanks, Adam

If my file says it's ok, then go ahead.
Though still have a backup ready - that should be standard practice for any upgrade anyway.

Yes you can set up a test forum. What we ask is that you make it non-public. This means more than just closing the board, you need to make it inaccessible to the public. Most common way is to put it in a folder called /testvb, and password protect that folder, using .htaccess. Most server control panels (eg cPanel, Plesk) have a 'password protect directories' type of feature which makes doing this a lot easier.

With your test forum, you will need to get into the admincp afterwards and change the URL settings to point to the right place, if you cannot log in this may have to be done in the database directly.

Also change the cookie prefix in BOTH config files, by default it's 'bb', just make the ones for the test copy bb2 or something (anything, as long as both config files have the same value).

Obviously you'll need to edit the /core/config.php file to point to the copy database...very important, otherwise it will write to the live one and you'll be in a mess.

              Hi Mark,

The upgrade successfully completed this morning. Thanks for the help and the pointers for a test system. Hopefully in time I'll make use of that.

              Kind regards, Adam
