    Step by step

Please allow me to create the most simple guide to installation. Yes and no answers are ok. Explanations must be kept to a minimum wording as I want to discover the common mistakes made by a brand new user. I wish to proceed step by step as a newbie.

    Step 1.
After downloading the zip file from the members area and extracting the contents I acquire web space. Before I upload the contents of the VB 5 upload folder, do I empty the public_html folder?

At present my public_html folder looks like this.

On a brand new web hosting account, no you would not empty your public_html directory.

If you had VB4 (or another version) already installed you should erase all the VB files however before upgrading. (and by erase, I mean move or otherwise get rid of but keep a backup of- just in case)

Cheers Joe, I will upload the upload file contents to the public_html folder on Monday and then try the install. I will report here what happens.

Successfully uploaded to the folder public_html/VB.

Not tried the install yet, I believe there are config files to deal with.

Actually if you start the install it should automatically bring up the config file builder.

Clicking Add Exception doesn't do anything. Firefox.

                  I will try IE 10.

                      I will try again later.
Don't worry so much about me, I am in no hurry to go live as of yet, just want to familiarize myself with the procedure. Cheers Joe.....

So maybe I should not upload the contents to a folder within the public_html folder. Do I upload to the first level or am I getting the link wrong?

Are you trying to connect via HTTPS or HTTP? You shouldn't be using HTTPS unless you have properly setup a security certificate which those errors say you did not.

These aren't issues due to vBulletin, these are due to use of the HTTPS protocol without a trusted certificate. You would get these errors even trying to access a basic text file.

Not sure how I am trying to connect. Where do I find this information?

What URL are you typing into your web browser? What URL is shown in your browser address bar when you get these errors? Just look and see if it starts with http or https.

Chrome auto hides the http. But if it is https it will show it.

I will remember that for next time. Thanks.

I think I will wait until I have it installed on localhost so I can do my design edits before uploading to live.
                            Still stuck at step 11.
