Currently, Related Topics is only available on vBulletin Cloud due to the infrastructure required. We will make this available to download customers once we are able to do so.Translations provided by Google.

I find Related Topics a "must have" feature for my forum, too. Is there a place where we can vote or something to make it happen faster?👍 4Comment

Just found this thread. Surprised this isn't standard yet. I was wondering why it was missing on my site.Comment

There is no change at this time, sorry. The way the feature works on the cloud platform makes porting it to self-hosted a non-trivial task that will require considerable development resources.MARK.B

The way this feature works is this...
A partial database of a Cloud site is sent to a Machine Language Parser on an Internet Brands server. This partial database includes things like the userid, nodeid, node content, time of creation, and a few other pieces of required data. It does not include any personal information. The Parser runs this data through some algorithms and creates its own database tables to store that information. When this site or a vBulletin Cloud site uses the module, the code will send information to the Parser and get back an array of Node IDs. None of this is in PHP.
Once the array of IDs is sent back, then the PHP part in vBulletin Cloud performs a search, gets the data, and displays that data in the module.
To make this available to Download customers, you will need to prime the system by uploading all your content to the Machine Language Parser. Then you will need to constantly upload your data to the parser via API calls. You'll get back an array of IDs and the module will populate. Adding it to the download version of vBulletin isn't merely adding a bit of code to the package. That is actually the easy part and finished. There is an entire infrastructure that needs to be built and secured. The current infrastructure isn't properly built to handle external access.Translations provided by Google.

I really don't see the value in "similar threads." You only see the thread title and have to open each thread to find out if they are actually similar. There's no discernible difference between that and doing a regular search. Can anyone explain to me why similar threads is better than using the search function?Comment
-
It's better because it doesn't require a search and what Related Topics displays is often more concise and relevant than what is returned by a search. Coincidentally, I searched this forum today for information and an Related Topics entry for the first search result I clicked on had the information I was looking for and that saved me from having to scroll through the list of a dozen or so other search items -
It doesn't show any content detail. You have to open the post to view the content detail. So, unless the topic title is incredibly detailed and accurate for every "similar topic" you still have to open each post individually. I get that searching is an extra step but it takes, literally, a few seconds.

by CarrfixrOn some threads here I see a "Related Topics" (module) at the bottom, showing related threads. Is this something new?
