Let's say someone wanted to change the source of the content slider images so that it pulls from custom pages instead of the first post in channels.

Is there a way to have it pull content from selected static HTML modules rather than featured posts?

It pulls its content from the search based on the JSON parameters provided. Static HTML Modules are not indexed or searchable. You would have to code your own custom module.
