5.4.0 and php 7.1 upgrade question

I'm currently running vb 5.3.4 patch level 1 and php 7.0 on ubuntu 16.04.1. I'm interested in upgrading to vb 5.4.0 but see that it is recommended to have php 7.1
I've read that there is no official php 7.1 in the ubuntu 16.04 repos. I'm hesitant in trying a 3rd party repo for 7.1

My question is what are the differences (if any) would I see in upgrading to vb 5.4.0 running php 7.0.? I have mysql 5.7.2 so I think I'm good there and I'm not using the Google reCAPTCHA either.

You probably won't notice any difference running PHP 7.0.X and PHP 7.1.X. PHP 7.1.X is just newer and fixes some bugs. As far as vBulletin is concerned, both will work properly.
