[Resolved] Links in channel subtabbar list

Some links in subtabbar not visible to all usergroups, who should have permission to. First I show you, what links are set in subtabbar:

Klicke auf die Grafik für eine vergrößerte Ansicht Name: navi.jpg Ansichten: 1 Größe: 45,4 KB ID: 4380808

    In english (only subtabbar):
    • New Topics
    • Today's Posts
    • Who's on line
    • Memberlist
    • BASS
    • Calendar.
    Subnav for Visitors
Klicke auf die Grafik für eine vergrößerte Ansicht Name: navi_visitors.jpg Ansichten: 1 Größe: 9,0 KB ID: 4380809

    Subnav for Registered Users
Klicke auf die Grafik für eine vergrößerte Ansicht Name: navi_loggedin.jpg Ansichten: 1 Größe: 10,4 KB ID: 4380810
Subnav for usergroup based on Registered Users
Klicke auf die Grafik für eine vergrößerte Ansicht Name: navi_loggedin_ug2.jpg Ansichten: 1 Größe: 8,4 KB ID: 4380811

    I have two questions about:

    1. Why registered users and usergroup based on registered users cannot see Today's Topics?
    2. Why usergroup based on Registered Users cannot see New Topics and Who's on line although they have permission to?

You need to edit the links and then click "User Groups: Edit" at the bottom of the pop-up window.
You can set the permissions there.

By default, "New Topics" is for logged in users only, and "Today's Posts" is for guests only.

I recommend making "Today's Posts" visible to everyone, but "New Topics" should not be visible to guests as it won't work properly, it requires a user account to function.

So that's okay so far?! Good.

      I'll not change it.

      Thank you for supporting me!

"Today's Posts" allows people to easily find recently updated threads, even if they've already read them.
"New Topics" only shows them when they are unread...once the user has read the thread, it will disappear from the New Topics list, but would still show in Today's Posts (assuming it was updated in the past 24 hours).

Some prefer one, others prefer the other. You'll notice we have both available on this site, as long as you're logged in.

That's why I'm asking for Today's Topics in subnav. Thank you for explaining this.

Because on my web site in sidebar are New Posts and New Topics modules, there is no need to add Today's Topics in subtabbar, I guess.

There should be a Today's Posts link....if not, you can add one.

Point it to this URL (I know it's huge!):

            Code:
            search?searchJSON=%7B%22last%22%3A%7B%22from%22%3A%22lastDay%22%7D%2C%22view%22%3A%22topic%22%2C%22starter_only%22%3A+1%2C%22sort%22%3A%7B%22lastcontent%22%3A%22desc%22%7D%2C%22exclude_type%22%3A%5B%22vBForum_PrivateMessage%22%2C%22vBForum_VisitorMessage%22%2C%22vBForum_Report%22%2C%22vBForum_Redirect%22%5D%7D

EDIT: Just seen. Today's Topics and Today's Posts are different links. Now I know, what you mean. Today's Posts exist in subnav on my forums, too.

By default there is no "Today's Topics" so I'm not sure where that's from...could be someone just renamed it for you. There are various versions of the Today's Posts link - mine is different to the one on here for instance - so comparing them exactly won;t tell you all that much.

On a default installation there should just be Today's Posts and New Topics.

If it has 'lastDay' in the JSON string then it is Today's Posts of some variety. You can also change that to lastWeek or lastMonth incidentally, or replace it with a number of days (eg 21). If it has 'unread_only' in the JSON string, then it is New Topics.

                  This is, what's in it:
                  Code:
                  search?searchJSON=%7B%22last%22%3A%7B%22from%22%3A%22lastDay%22%7D%2C%22view%22%3A%22topic%22%2C%22starter_only%22%3A+1%2C%22sort%22%3A%7B%22lastcontent%22%3A%22desc%22%7D%2C%22exclude_type%22%3A%5B%22vBForum_PrivateMessage%22%5D%7D
Think it's a good idea to exclude visitor messages, reports and redirects from. I test it. Click image for larger version

It is the link "new topics" with the code BulliM mentioned.
It is a standard-link of vB.
                      Code:
                      search?searchJSON=%7B%22last%22%3A%7B%22from%22%3A%22lastDay%22%7D%2C%22view%22%3A%22topic%22%2C%22starter_only%22%3A+1%2C%22sort%22%3A%7B%22lastcontent%22%3A%22desc%22%7D%2C%22exclude_type%22%3A%5B%22vBForum_PrivateMessage%22%5D%7D

We liked your idea for this Mark so decided to do this for our guests because currently they get a message to say they must register or log in when clicking "today's posts".

However, on checking the permissions of who could use today's posts in the nav bar option, it was already set so that guests could. Assuming it must be something to do with search permissions for guests being turned off (a throw back to when we self hosted and were trying to keep database use down) we turned on search for guests.

Problem is when they now click on "today's posts' they get a Recaptcha error message and just the advanced search box, not today's post as you do when logged in. Recaptcha works OK when people register so not sure what the error is all about.

                            Thank you, that works now.

Only slight problem is that it gives guests the search box next to the logo, is there any danger of that being misused or causing too high a bandwidth use? Is there a way to turn that off for guests but still give access to 'today's posts'? Or don't you think it a problem?

Thanks again for your help, much appreciated.

No easy to change that round, Today's Posts is a search so it's all or nothing.
To be honest it's highly unlikely to cause any issues. This sort of thing dates back to the days when sites used to be conserving bandwidth due to high hosting costs and often poor server resources. There's no need to be blocking searches today.
