Before an upgrade from 3.8.11 version...

    Hi,

The actual system is customized (pictures...) and it uses a file system outside the database.
I understand that I need a NEW folder to upload the vB5 files before the upgrade process.
Can I keep the old folder (rename it? and deleting unnecessary files) for the files system and pictures I need for next customization?

    Thanks.

If you are talking about the normal vBulletin attachments, if these are stored in the file system then you'll need to keep these present when you run the upgrade. The script needs to be able to access them.

Actually, there are stored in a folder within the forums' folder.
Must I move them into the new vB5 folder prior the upgrading process?
It was not my intent to move them outside the site.

When I perform upgrades of sites in a sub-directory (eg.something.com/forum), I use the following method:

        - create /forum2 directory
        - upload vB5 files to /forum2
        - copy customavatars directory to /forum2/core
        - copy attachments directory to /forum2
        - rename /forum to /forum-old
        - rename /forum2 to /forum
        - run upgrade script

This allows the least amount of downtime when uploading files etc. It also ensures that the attachments directory remains on the same filepath (remember that the path setting is the server path).

That said, we recommend that your attachments directory is actually held above the web root for security otherwise any permissions you set to prevent viewing can be bypassed if people find the actual links to attachments.

          That's clear.
          Thanks.
