Upgraded from 3.8.11 to 5.3.0 - Very slow - how to improve performance?

I just purchased 5.3.0 to update a 3.8.11 site (http://forums.flightinfo.com) and I'm baffled why 5.3 is so slow. MySQL is on a dedicated and powerful box (Windows Server 2012 R2 128 GB Ram, Dual Proc, RAID 10...) PHP 7.1.5, Latest MySQL GA (5.7.x), all other sites are running great (two others on vB 4.latest).

I have vB5 installed to http://dev.flightinfo.com to test before I do a production switch and it's just slow! What are things to do to make it run faster? I also will be using only the forum so I can turn other things off, if I figure out where.

    Thank you for your help.

Your page load is pretty quick (1-2 seconds).

    What do you find slow?

Clicking on a forum is about a 2 second delay, a thread 1-2 seconds, I expect much faster. Forum home is the fastest probably as it's cached I'm guessing.
