    Email Notifications Not Working

    Hi there,
I'm sure this has been asked before, but I can't find anything relevant on a search.
For some reason, my forum doesn't seem to send notification emails out. For example, when a user receives a private message.
I have checked the settings on the users and everything is set correctly - but still no emails received?
It always used to work okay, I'm not sure what would have changed for this to no longer work.

I have done the diagnostic check, which comes back as successful and I receive the email fine.

I read that if I receive that diagnostic email, it's a server configuration issue?
What server configuration am I missing here? Mail outside of vBulletin seems to work fine?

I am not sure that vB5 actually sends emails out for PMs....I know it has a setting but at one point that didn't work. May have been fixed, I'll need to check.

PMs require a separate check on https://www.vbulletin.com/forum/settings/notifications

Do these users have that box checked on your site?

Yes, they have that option ticked.

Just FYI - I tried to reply to this from an iPhone 6 and couldn't click into the reply box at the bottom, so I've had to log into a laptop to reply.

Site's just been upgraded so you might need to refresh the page fully.

Ah, I can reply now thanks very much! The '"Write something ..." wasn't coming up before.

VB5 was sending emails out before because I tested it previously - but now it's not sending, despite the options being ticked okay.

I will be updating to 5.3 sometime soon, but if I'm getting the diagnostic email okay, there must be something else?

              Thanks guys.

When you log into the AdminCP, what does it say for "Number of Queued Emails" in the data table?

You can turn on email logging... To do this:
                    1. Create a folder in your forum directory called /logs/
                    2. CHMOD directory to 777.
                    3. Log into the AdminCP.
                    4. Go to Settings -> Options ->Error Handling and Logging.
                    5. For Email enter /path/to/forums/logs/email. For example, this is what I use on my test server: C:\wamp64\www\vbulletin\vb5_dev\logs\email
                    6. Send some PMs with people willing to test.
                    7. Is there anything in the log file?

If there is, then you need to ask your hosting provider if they can provide the email logs from the email server. That is the only way to see what happens after vBulletin tells the server to send an email.

Should be noted that PM notification can get a bit spammy if you use vBulletin Messenger as well. Every chat message is technically a PM.

Ah, okay - great stuff! I have tried this before when I was testing.

Can the path be in the format: /home/*serveruser*/forums/emaillog ?

You can use that format. vBulletin, or rather the web server, just needs to be able to write to that directory. The system will add .log to the end of the path that you enter.

                          Thanks Wayne. That's really helpful!
It was a server issue - Apparently they were getting caught in a spam filter, despite reading as a spam score of 0 and showing "Accepted".
Thanks for both of your help.
