  • Channels appear as 'Unread' spontaneously.

There is a very peculiar issue that's been affecting our forums for quite some time now. For some users, the ‘Mark Channels Read’ button isn't marking any channels as Read, and some of the Channels appear as ‘Unread’ spontaneously, even if no new posts have been been made. It's very strange, I tried to see if there's a pattern with what channels appear as 'Unread' but it seems to happen at random.

We tried changing a few things ourselves, and it seemed to take care of this problem, but it just started happening again. Here's the list of what we already tried:

Changed Marking type to Cookie based. I changed to cookies, and then back.
Changed Marking type to Database (no automatic forum marking)
Changed Marking type to Database (automatic forum marking)
    Launched forum Maintenance
    Cleared system cache
Updated to the latest version of vBulletin
Changed Cached Post Lifetime from 7 to 10 days

I'd really appreciate if you guys could help me out with this one. It's very annoying.

    Thank you!

Please upgrade to vBulletin 5.2.5. Does the problem continue?

Also, you should set your read marking to Database (automatic forum marking). The other options are obsolete and may get removed.

Thank you for the response. I've already set the marking to Database (automatic forum marking) a month ago, but the problem persists.

We'll try updating to 5.2.5 and see if it helps.

        Hello again!

We have updated to the latest version of vBulletin last week, and so far we have not been getting this issue.

        Thanks!

I have to bump this thread.

The issue popped up again, unfortunately. Several of our team members are reporting that some of the channels keep popping up as 'Unread'.

Is there anything else you could suggest?

          Thank you!

The only thing that springs to mind is some sort of caching on the server which is serving up cached versions of the page with threads still showing as unread...I have certainly seen that happen in the past.

Are you using CloudFlare? If so, this can cause issues like this. There is no workaround at this time except disabling CloudFlare.

                No, we don't use CloudFlare.
