I had the same problem and I think hes talking about the Settings > general > Topic/Forum Read Marking Type
there are 3 options and for me the cookie was default.
Inactivity/Cookie Based
Database (no automatic forum marking)
Database (automatic forum marking)
Threads Not Being Marked as Read - 5.1.4

Threads Not Being Marked as Read - 5.1.4
I am having trouble with forum topics NOT being marked as read after they are read. This is a new upgrade to 5.1.4 from 4.2.2 PL2.
vBulletin Version:
5.1.4
PHP Version:
5.4.28
MySQL Version:
5.5.40-cll
Any Addons installed:
Tapatalk
Does the issue occur in a default style?
Yes
Does the issue occur using the English language provided?
Yes
Error message on the screen:
None
Browser and Browser version used:
Firefox, Safari, Chrome
A list of steps that can be used to recreate the issue:
Log into site. Open thread. Navigate back to topic list. Observe that thread is still marked as unread (bold and icon).Tags: None
