    General Questions

    Why were profile pictures removed?

Profile and Avatar picture functionality has been combined. There is a higher emphasis of user avatars throughout the software and combining these two made sense in the design. On your profile you will be able to upload an image as your profile picture. This image will then be resized to be used as your avatar in every location where an Avatar is appropriate. The system will show a default image if the user does not upload an image to their profile.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Terminology
    What are Channels?
Channels are Nodes that can contain other Nodes. In vBulletin 5, Channels include: Forums, Blogs, Social Groups, Private Messages, Visitor Messages, User Albums, and Flagged (reported) Content. Additional Channels may be added in the future. Some channels can be maintained with the Channel Management (formerly Forum Management) tools in the Admin CP. Others are hidden from view and maintained by the individual users.

    What are Nodes?
Nodes are any content within vBulletin 5. They can be discussions, photos, links or channels among other content types.

    What is a Channel Owner?
The user that has ownership of a channel. They control what happens in the channel itself. Blogs and Social Groups are examples of channels that can have owners.

    What is a Channel Moderator?
A user appointed by the Channel Owner to moderate that channel. Blogs and Social Groups are examples of channels that can have moderators.

    What is a Channel User?
Some channels can be made private. A Channel User is an individual that has permission to access a specific channel. Social Groups are an example of channels that have users.

    What are Subscribers?
Subscribers are people who want to follow a user, blog or thread.

    Functionality
    Are Page Names Case Sensitive?
Yes. Page names are Case Sensitive. Keep this in mind or you will probably get a invalid_page_url error.

    Technical

    What is Responsive
Responsive Web Design (RWD) essentially indicates that a web site is crafted to use Cascading Style Sheets 3 media queries, an extension of the @media rule, with fluid proportion-based grids (which use percentages and EMs instead of pixels), to adapt the layout to the viewing environment, and probably also use flexible images. As a result, users across a broad range of devices and browsers will have access to a single source of content, laid out so as to be easy to read and navigate with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling.

In vBulletin 5, this allows us to create a single style that works on multiple screen sizes including smartphones, tablets and desktop monitors.

Why are there two config.php files now?
vBulletin 5.X is currently two parts. Presentation and Core. Presentation is used to show everything to the user. Core is what makes it work behind the scenes. The system is designed so that in the future, Presentation and Core do not need to be on the same server or in the same path. This is why we have two config.php files.

Because Core hasn't been completely rewritten yet, including almost the entire AdminCP, it requires the bburl variable to include files and function properly. These need to point to the Core URL. The Presentation Layer or front-end doesn't need bburl to function. Presentation gets everything it needs via the API. What this means is that a Mobile Presentation layer could be plugged in and you have Mobile Suite Apps. Or a Facebook Presentation and a Facebook App. Since everything uses the same API, the mobile apps gain more functionality and should be less buggy.
