Not sure if this should be in the Install/Upgrade forum or here.

I was able to run the Upgrade from 3.8.4 to 5.1.2.
Part way though the 4 betas I had to download a copy of 4 and use it's upgrade process. The one in 5 hit an error and I couldn't get past.
Then switched back once I was past the 4 beta changes.
I followed all the instructions I could find here.
Disabled (even deleted) all plugins
I used a fresh directory with all new vb files.
I later moved the attachments folder but probably need to do this when I do the upgrade.
Fast forward to today. (a few days of playing around and checking it all out)
The forum is running on a test server. Not usable but running.
The test site is running IIS8 on a W2012 Virtual Machine with FastCGI PHP 5.5.11 and MySQL 5.5.38
I gave it 4 cores and Dynamically Assigned Ram.
I have watched it and CPU and Ram has never been bad so I am certain it's fine especially for just testing.
I see a lot of people have posted complaints about speed, but would love to hear if anyone says anything on my test site in particular.
I feel like it is slow but compared to what? Is this what others are seeing? My only comparison is this site.
Other issues I noticed right away are:
Images which were stored in the DB no longer work. Avatars among other things, I switched the production server to store these on disk which I thought they were and this should help with the final move when I do it. If I try to do it on the test machine after the upgrade (admincp using the User Picture manager) I get:
<That action could not be completed. Please try again, and if this occurs again please contact the system administrator and tell them how you got this message. >
If doing this before the move is my best bet I'll ignore this for now.
One of my bigger issues is the site acts odd.
If you are not logged in no matter what you click on takes you to the forum home.
Unregistered / Not Logged In permissions has not changed and I checked and it should be able to view posts and open channels.
No Clue here.
But if you log in it works.
I setup a test user on the test machine
User:VBTest Pass:VBPassword
Feel free to try it yourself.
Other thoughts/questions besides what is above.
Could Indexing causing some of the slowness? I know the DB is big but not that big.
I have a mixture of InnoDB and MyISAM tables. Over the years I can't remember why some had to switch some couldn't
We've been running vb for years and there is probably a ton of junk in the DB from all the upgrades.
I have followed as many tweeks and I could find for MySQL but maybe there is something I am missing here.
Thanks for any help.
Jeff
