5.1.1 upgrade from 5.0.5 error on step 17/17

During the final step of the upgrade (Status: Processing XML, Step 17 of 17) I am receiving an error "<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> MySQL server has gone away".
I tried doing research and they said the main reason for this is a server timeout. However the server is set to a default timeout and this error is occuring after only ~5 minutes. There must be something else happening that I'm not understanding and it is only ever on the final step that it happens. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Make sure your MySQL packet size is set to like 16MB/

i double checked my packet size and it is currently set to 16M. still having the same issue

This is something you will now need to pick up with your host. "MySQL Server has gone away" is a server error and if the advice given hasn't worked, your hosts will need to investigate.

I had the same exact problem when upgrading from 5.0.5 to 5.1.0, so when 5.1.1 came in I tried again. When the process hanged again, I pressed F5 (refresh button), and it restarted the upgrade, but it continued from where it got stuck. Upgrade successful! Good luck.

okay so new problem, i was able to fix the time out issue, however now when i run the update it can run for days and never complete... we've tried to refresh countless times and to no avail. No matter what i do it will not complete the upgrade.

This isn't enough information to understand what the problem is. We need the specifics. Step, PHP version, MySQL version, etc...

Overall it sounds like you're still timing out but in a different location.

It occurs every time at step 17/17. I've tried fully restarting the upgrade and it still gets stuck there. I'm on PHP version 5.4, MySQL version 4.1.12, upgrading from vBulletin 5.0.5 to vBulletin 5.1.1

vBulletin 5 doesn't run on MySQL 4 at all.

I just tried to enter your upgrade script and although the upgrader screen loads, inputing your customer numbers presents the following error:

Database connection failed due to unexpected error:

1044) Access denied for user '*****' to database '*******' Please ensure that the database and server is correctly configured and try again

Obviously I've removed the database details but your database credentials don't work - you need to resolve that first.
