Im looking to make a forum invisible to guests and registered members. What exactly do I need to change in order to achieve this? The forum already exists and it is viewable to everyone but banned users.

Just edit the forum level permissions and choose the all no setting at the top of those usergroup(s) -
To be more specific (since I see you are new), go to admincp > Channel Management > Channel Permissions > find the forum and then select the usergroup you want to remove permission for > hit All No at the top > Save.
After you are done, you will want to go to Maintenance > Clear System Cache
