How do you tag forum members in conversations like on Facebook, Twitter and Google+?

I'm not trying to be ugly but for $400 I can't get the most basic of social media tagging and need to go spend another $80 with a 3rd party to get this feature when it's native in BBPress, SimplePress, Vanilla, etc., for free? vBulletin is supposed to be the best. How was something so essential and basic an oversight?
