What is the usergroup called "Channel Member", when does someone become a channel member? Is this an automatic promotion when someone is requested to join a group? or channel? or can I just ignore it? Thx in advance.

I'm wondering the same thing. As I understood it, users can be members of specific channels and not others and users can be assigned as channel moderators and channel owners. However, the permissions of each channel group (members, moderators and owners) have universal permissions, meaning that whatever permissions they are granted by the channel usergroup applies to all channels, not the specific one. I tested this out and it just doesn't make any sense. Or the controls for it are very well hidden.
