    One of the things I do is to disallow URL links for the first ten posts and then I only allow one URL link per post thereafter.
    One consistency with spam is that it contains URL links and usually more than one of them.

    We moderate new members and have a 'promotion' set up that once they have 2 posts they automatically move to the registered member user group which is free from moderation.

    We don't approve posts unless we are sure they are genuine.

    What have you done thus far? There are a number of things you can do. Are you using Akismet or Stop Forum Spam? Are you using the Question And Answer feature? Are you manually approving registrations? Are you requiring valid email addresses? Are you requiring valid PCRE expressions as user names?
