Mobile Revenue Benefits of Upgrading from vB 4 to vB 5 Connect?

    Hello,

We currently run vBulletin 4.2.5 without any major issues but have recently been considering upgrading to vBulletin 5 Connect. We currently offer Tapatalk for our users, as per Google Analytics, approximately 60% of our site users access it via a phone or tablet (not all using Tapatalk, obviously). We use Google AdSense to generate revenue, but we feel we may be losing out on income from mobile users (particularly those using Tapatalk, as we receive literally a couple bucks a month from them). If we were to upgrade to vBulletin 5 Connect and disable Tapatalk completely so that any mobile user is accessing our site via a web browser, are there any benefits vBulletin 5 Connect offers in terms of potentially increasing revenue via AdSense from mobile (or non-mobile) users? We just want to be sure that it makes sense for us to upgrade before we do, as if there isn't a significant benefit, we're happy enough where we're currently. Thanks in advance.

The standard vBulletin 5 Styles are mobile compatible. We call them Responsive. So you would have all the same advertising locations available on Mobile as you do on the Desktop. I don't know how this currently corresponds with your Tapatalk implementation.

Thank you - is the mobile compatibility / responsiveness something new in vB 5, or does it apply to what we have (vB 4.2.5)?

vBulletin 4.2.X has a separate Mobile Style. This style doesn't have all the functionality of the main desktop style. The style used is determined by the type of device.

With vBulletin 5, there is one style for the desktop, tablets and mobile devices. Instead of trying to determine what type of device the system is displayed on, it determines the screen size and then alters the layout to fit that screen via CSS. So you could have a three column layout on the desktop but this will display as a single column on a phone or small tablet due to the width of the display. In addition, you can set modules to only display at specific sizes if you wish. So you can have different ad units for your mobile devices (based on screen size) compared to desktop devices.

Don't forget that vb5 uses Ajax to load pages of the same discussions.
Plus at this time there is no obvious solution to put ads between posts within a topic.

These two aspects may actually cause you to loose ad revenues in the migration.
you should also make sure you don't use any plugins or ad-ons you might miss as vb5 is pretty poor on mods.

That said, I don't regret migrating to vb5 as the responsive is better for seo and latests updates (gdpr, ...) are important for me. Also at some point vb4 will probably become a problem with php and db versions...
