Not every feature in the tracker will ever be added. I feel strongly about this one, as I understand there is a segment of the customer base where keyword weighted urls don't help a lot, or make sense.

I'd already be happy, if the IDs of forum categories/forums were added to the URL (like it is already done in topics). Then "true" renaming of categories/forums (changes to the wording in the URL) would be possible.

I would have been a very strong proponent for ids in urls, but that is not how most of the urls in the system work.

Unfortunately... I don't see any reason why this wasn't added in the first place. The only thing I can imagine is that someone actually forgot this "feature".

The way the system is designed (from the last time I had a conversation with someone about this, someone being a developer) is that the routesystem is actually not tied to the ID's at all, so from that point of view it didn't make sense for channel routes to have ids in them. However It would have, iMO, be better than suffixing channels with -aa to -zz when running into conflicting names.

We've had a few problems with something like this, where customers had no names or bad names, on their forums in vB4, and then after the upgrade had a bunch of issues. If a unique id (the nodeid) had always been part of the system it wouldn't have broken as badly.

I see. Well, I have a feeling that changing this to an ID-based system wouldn't be exactly a small task...

There are no current plans for this to be implemented.

There is no prospect in the foreseeable future of such a feature being added. vB5 already has "friendly URLs" to a level that suits most customers so it's not really going to be an urgent priority.

Constantly bumping this thread demanding updates will make no difference whatsoever.
Any updates at all will be in the relevant tracker entry:
