    Is this proper English?

I don't mean to disrespect anyone and I am dyslexic myself.

However in the message center these phrases don't read as proper English to me -

There is no new message. Should it not be 'There are no new messages'

There is no new request. Should it not be 'There are no new requests'

Etc. or is it just me?

I tried searching the text directly in the phrase manager but was returned with no results.

Whilst the sentences are correct your versions suit the context better.
I am sure someone will explain how to change them.
    Regards

      The shorter the better.
      There is no new message
      There are no new messages
      There is no new request
      There are no new requests
I'm not a native speaker but both phrases seem to be right.

Pretty sure I entered a JIRA for these back in the day.

Yep, I did. Its status is 'BRB Future Release'.

I'm not sure what is right but they stuck out like a sore thumb to me when I entered the message center.

Im not too bothered about having a few extra characters, just wondered if they are hard coded as usually in vb4 if I find text on the site I wnt to change I just search for it in the phrases manager and up it pops.

I can't seem to find them in vb5 though.

Yes, for Project VBV. I'm not sure you'd be able to see it, but here's the link: http://tracker.vbulletin.com/browse/VBV-2701

Either, depending on whether you search for text or phrase name.
