Honestly, I don't think Paul has any say in this, much less did he get to "pass" anything. He just states how it is handled. He does not say he approves of it (of course he does not say he doesn't, either, but then...).

I'll try and be constructive here. I am a long term vB3 user who migrated away to a competitor rather than upgrade to vB4. I have looked at the demo of vB5 with as open a mind as possible, since I have no loyalties as such, other than to my community to whom I want to give the easiest and best possible forum experience.

My expectations after ALL the feedback given about vB4, after all the developments of IPB, plus the good reception Xenforo's slick and minimalist design got, and finally adding on the almost limitless funding available from IB, was for the best, slickest, most bleeding edge forum platform available, even in beta stage.

What I have seen is so terribly slow, this is a devastating first impression to have something public running this slow to the point of it being nearly unusable. The forum design is now less bloated visually, but jumps about in counter-intuitive ways. Just finding the forum topic list is a chore, nothing about the feel or usability is an evolution of existing forums, it even still has the "if this is your first visit message" (that's so 1990's!), we have a car crash of confusing terms just on the first page: "subscriptions", "topics", "channels", "directory".

There are posts in a thread, some of these have comments too? How confusing is that going to get in a long thread, where latest content could be on an old post?

A message telling me I am not authorised to view something I am already viewing?

Like any other human being I am of course resistant to change and somewhat cynical after the vB4 fall out. I genuinely wish the development team well on this and hope they can take on board the extensive comments provided by customers to seriously speed up this new platform and inject some "WOW!" factor into it. As it stands, moving my community over to vB5 would be a major step backwards, sorry guys

I am going to spend some time however on any 3rd party installs of vB5 to see if, with a bit of tweaking and changing the options, it becomes better.

      Anyway thanks for reading!

Yes, I know, long story, but basically the label got switched last week when the website switch was planned, but technical issues caused it to get postponed.
Since it was already switched, it was left that way, there have been builds every day (and sometimes more than 1 a day) since then, so the number has quickly climbed.

How can you pass this copy from Alpha to public Beta with this quality?
I already answered that, and you quoted it.

Feel sorry for those Alpha testers, they weren't really needed.

They were. For your information, they have helped quite a lot.

I don't see where he said that. He said that the alpha testers provided good feedback and bug reporting.

The alpha testers provided tons of insight and feedback. Please do not trivialize their hard work.

The interesting thing over the next few weeks is to see how the new code base will allow them to add features, squish bugs ect...

                  Does beta mean feature/code freeze?

Are we actually looking at what will be released, or just now watching live development with a new code base that will allow them so add features and squish bugs significantly faster.

I'm not sure what the obsession with activity stream like stuff is. I think it's great, I just don't want my site built around it but I could envision the kind of site that would.

                  - - - Updated - - -

Clicking on Main Forum now goes to the topic structure? Did this change from Activity or something like it earlier today?

If so, that will reduce a lot of confusion ... or maybe i am mistaken.
                  Hmmm. Cheese.

You're watching a live development. Along the way, expect plenty of bugs to be squished.

That's what I thought. I think they should call it "Watch Live Development" instead of Beta.

I think it's great they are doing this. They just need to make it more clear that is what is going on and that might wipe out a lot of criticism.

This is a good window into the development, not the release of a bad product.

Over 100 queries to load the most basic of pages? CSS which is 450k? It's interesting that IB don't realise that if you pay two developers £100 an hour, you will actually get better software than if you pay twenty developers £10 an hour.

The number of JS files at the end is frightening!
