That refers to hashing. So does that mean that the vB5 system uses hashing rather than encryption?

        This is from the announcement:

The Password System has been refactored. A new password system has been added to vBulletin. This allows us to quickly add new password hashing schemes if the need arises without invalidating old passwords. Users can easily define the priority of the scheme they want to use with an XML file. This functionality change will cause any single sign-on systems that integrate with vBulletin to need updating. If you are using such a system, you will need to wait until it is updated before upgrading to 5.1.0.

I'm not sure where you got the idea that hashing was replacing encryption.

Anyway, here's the tracker entry that covers what changed:

How does it handle old passwords? Does it:

          A) Leave them running on the old hashing scheme
          or
          B) Add an extra hashing scheme (the new one) to the existing one

Old passwords are left on the old scheme until they are updated- after they are updated they will use blowfish instead md5.

Many can give you more reasons to stay with vb4 instead of vb5 though...

A big one is the plugin system. It's terrible and is hard to use, which is why you aren't seeing many mods being made for it. Mods in vb3 and vb4 were the driving force behind it.

I've been on forums for years but only since 3 weeks ago a forum owner. Although I've had several issues, some mine, some the software, I think vB5 is very feature rich compared to other versions sites I've visited had installed. vB5 has a long way to go as far as getting those features to work correctly.

Personally, had I known the issues vB5 still has, I would have gone with version 4. There is a lot more available as far as mods and styles. Since I have version 5, I'm dealing with the issues and trying to get the features online the best I can. Until more people switch up to 5, the demand won't be there to force VBulletin to fix it, and to get the coders out there building new mods and styles. I'll give it a year, and if the software hasn't matured by then, I will move over to another brand.

vB5 gets more stable with each release. You can now start a forum with it and it should work well.

The Cloud platform is also innovative and provides an ideal way to "test the water" if you're thinking of starting a forum. You can subsequently migrate to the full "download" product later on if it works for you, I've migrated a couple of sites now and it's surprisingly easy to do.

I started my forum in 2002. I wish there'd been a product like this then. I knew nothing back in those days. It was all trial and error and php parse errors when a tweak went wrong!

Because VB4 isn't getting major updates like a new password system- such efforts are being used to improve VB5 instead.

vBulletin 5 is way better than vB4.

You have to edit the css for the text to even look good on the page. While vB5 is neat and clean. Both earlier version are not as good.

                        I definitely feel that way.

But VB5 does have its benefits-

                          1) Responsive Design
                          2) Site Builder
                          3) Stronger Passwords
                          4) Option to require paid subscription to register
                          5) Updated ckeditor

Bonus #6 - Some people like the style better.
Really ? is that all you got ?

is that why I should pay $209 for an upgrade ?

This is 3 years old. VB5 isn't the same as it was 3 years ago.

As Joe said, if your happy with vb4, stay there.

Vb5 is worth the upgrade imo. If you're worried, buy it and install on a test server and play around with it and see if it meets your needs.

I was asked for 5 reasons and gave 5 solid reasons.

If you don't want to upgrade, no one is forcing you. VB 4.2.5 or 3.8.11 will work for a long time.

I'm using vb 10 years and for me vB5 is step backward.
                                I don't see any advantages in vB5.
I use vb4 which is is highly customizable and even I wrote some mods it.
So if anyone know why the heck should I upgrade my vb4, please tell me.

                                Kind regards,
                                Ross
Am currently running vb 5 on my local server, on a serious note vbulletin 5 is the best, as an admin you will find a reason to always play around in your site. Lot of features like Reply and comment and a lot more. I also like the ajax features. I just hope vb add more features e.g similar thread and many more.

The bad news is i was hoping vb team will add twitter, google, yahoo login and others but still we still only have Facebook login only.
