Five reasons to use vB5 instead of vB4

    Hi guys,

Can you give me at least 5 advantages of vB5 over vB4.
I'm using vb 10 years and for me vB5 is step backward.
    I don't see any advantages in vB5.
I use vb4 which is is highly customizable and even I wrote some mods it.
So if anyone know why the heck should I upgrade my vb4, please tell me.

    Kind regards,
    Ross

If you are happy with your site then I would suggest you stay with what makes you happy.

But VB5 does have its benefits-

      1) Responsive Design
      2) Site Builder
      3) Stronger Passwords
      4) Option to require paid subscription to register
      5) Updated ckeditor

Bonus #6 - Some people like the style better.

      Thx Joe!

      I hope you'll keep support of vB4.
From your list I can see only one advantage - #3
And I'm absolutely disagree with #1.
      It's slow and buggy.
Even here takes ages post to be published.
Same problems I see in other vB5 forums too.

If you are a new user of vBulletin, I think you'll find vb5 much better than vb4 because of the site builder and the cleaner look and feel. It took me about 30 minutes to get my site (www.disaster.com) up and running with ads in the header, footer and sidebar. I find it really easy to adjust the design and layout of my site. I played with vb4 a year ago and couldn't figure out where to start.

However, if you're an existing vb4 user, you'll find a number of vb4 functions don't exist in vb5, and the add-on community is pretty close to non-existent (although I really appreciate the few people making an effort on providing some additional functions and features!). I think vb5 is well on its way and will get there, but not quick enough for many people.

Now is getting clear to me.
So vb5 is like iP**** and vb4 is more like Android.
That explains a lot to me.

            P.S.
Isnt the last owners of vb solutions Americans?

How do you find the speed of vB5 on your site compared to vB4?

Hard to tell. I have activity on my site with vb5. I was just playing with vb4. I have yet to configure memcache and various other tools too. Overall, however, I find the speed good. Check it out yourself by going to the site!

                        The obvious answer is: No.

Here is the JIRA that covers this issue: http://tracker.vbulletin.com/browse/VBV-12285

I have been a customer of vB since 3.5 days

Your support of 4 is onto security only now.. I was told if I wanted to use Facebook Connect I would have to upgrade my newest forum to 5.1.3... After COMPLETELY upgrading my server for 5 (MySQL and PHP), and upgrading my old forum to vB5, it has been a nightmare...

I would suggest IF vB is going to turn everything upside down with a major release you DONT stop your support of solid good working forums until ALL the major bugs are out of the NEW release

Masterross: As far as I am concerned, there is not ONE thing in 5 that would want me to upgrade ANY of the other forums I run (and I run a few) from 4.2.2 PL1

For what it's worth, the 3.x line will always be unofficially supported in some way. Internet Brands own forums (and there's a lot of them) are all still running 3.x and seemingly don't want to touch 4.x or 5.x due to "mod incompatibilities".

The dying vBulletin.org still runs 3.x so that'll obviously also need updates. I don't see that ever moving to 4.x or 5.x as it's simply not worth converting the customisations when the entire site is on a massive decline.

Then there's forums owned by staff members of vB, they still use 3.x, many of which don't really have any mods on them to speak of.

4,2.3 is currently in Beta and is not a security fix so to say 4.x is only is "security only" isn't accurate. I'm not sure any firm decision has been made what may or may not happen to the 4.x line in the future. I would say major changes are likely off the table but other than that I don't think anyone is saying for sure. At one time we thought 3.x was only getting security updates, but then it get updates for PHP 5.4 and beyond.
