I really don't know what everyone's complaining about. Sorry this forum isn't hack able yet, not many add ons nor themes. Sucks, don't it? Everyone who bought this software knew what they were getting into. You agreed to download knowing it would have bugs. Things aren't perfect. New add ons and themes need to be created that's all. I'm sure there's tons more other things people will say besides ui, but I think vb5 is nice for me. I'm not a coder. I think not having to manage a database nor having to code a grid is awesome! Biggest thing I saw with vb4 backward was the endless coding and hacking people did. Not to each other but layouts n such. The technology will grow and expand. Give it a few months. I mean there are people who *****ed about the upgrade to vb4 from vb3 and now look at it as of high demand.
Bought vb5, just because..

To be fair, what do you mean by the above?
a. Do you mean less than half a year or less than a year?
b. Do you mean by the date where IB started selling VB5 or by the date IB dropped the label Beta?
Also, what do you envision IB should achieve by the deadline you gave?
a. Bare bone stability?
b. Half complete stability?
c. Or fully complete stable release?
Since you don't know what everyone's complaining about and since each and everyone of the complainers has their own reasons, allow me to explain to you my complaints. I'm well aware of IB's infamous if not notorious name of which can easily be found by simple Google search, and yet I still bought VB5 under the following assumption;
that VB5 has a lot of potentials and given enough time of which I'm willing to wait patiently, it will prevail as the leading forum software, and that while VB5 is in the process, VB4 development will continue as normal
What I did not foresaw is the following:
1. The dropping of the Beta label while the software itself is still far from stable. I don't think you will expect this no matter how much you did a research on IB's game-play.
2. The sudden demise of VB4 of which is now a de facto legacy software. It's already around one and a half year now and there is still no update on VB4. Note that 4.2.1. is merely a smokescreen, a last year update that was being released recently (i.e. there is nothing major has been done for VB4 during the enormous time span). 4.2.1. answers not a single thing of the major issues that has been repeatedly voted and demanded both in JIRA and in the forum itself.
Now, please do tell me if my complaints aren't warranted and I assume by now you have an inkling of understanding of why at least one customer is complaining.👍 1-
Great post! I love it but...............................................................................what are you hoping to achieve? I am getting the impression that VB4 is more of your bag.
By the way, your complaints are warranted. Always a pleasure to witness a passionate and articulate summary.
That my friends is guaranteed from durruti of all evil, every time.
Great stuff, I may have a job for this guy in the not too distant.....

vb5 will be powerful in CMS feature because of its sitebuilder. You dont have to manual code grid anymore etc.
but yes its superbuggy, less featured than vb4 and slower than vb4 and vb3. vb4 matured in years not few months.
Looking at styling, its by far left a day behind by xenforo. I know because I done both.Comment

Is 4.x as buggy as 5.x from your point of view?

I think if you were upgrading from 3.8.7 to 4.2.1 that must mean you are either not using a CMS, or are using something else to provide this feature. That being the case you wouldn't necessarily need to use the 4.2.1 CMS. The forums and blogs in 4.2.1 work pretty well. The CMS takes a bit of learning as an admin and it's less intuitive for your users to get to grips with than the forums and blogs. What we do with the CMS is that the admins (who are familar with it) use it for news and jobs. The users don't often post in the CMS and when they do they often get it wrong because for example they don't always hit "publish" "apply" or "save." If you just wanted to upgrade your forum add blogs and retain the calendar probably you'd be OK with vB4.

No we didn't: Those of us who upgraded our licences from vB4 to vB5 tried to get information on how long it would take before the features we needed would be available in vB5. There wasn't any information, not even best guesses. It was just a gamble which hasn't yet paid off for anyone who upgraded their licence.
