Does the database still work on old forum??

Before i start using this, what i want cleared up is this.

both databases are on the same sever, when i use the converter does it physically remove the database from the source and puts it in the destination database or does it copy and convert it, reason iam asking if it goes wrong will i still have a working forum (source forum)??

The importer system only reads data, not alter

So if i start converting one database to vb and it stops, the old forum and its database will still be intact and members will be ok, i woundn't have lost it all?
