Resizing already uploaded images

I've been careless at setting limits to image uploads when creating my forum many years ago and now I have to deal with GBs of attachment data on the server that i'd somehow like to try and reduce.

Is that at all possible in some automatic way that would keep attached photos in posts functioning? I have come across some threads on the topic but couldn't find a conclusive answer (something to do with resizing on server side messing up images on forum side).

I am running 4.2.0 Patch 1

I can't recall a function to do this on vBulletin 4.
