Are there performance benefits for using SMTP Server instead of PHP mail functions in 4.2.5?

I am adding the newsletter add on from DB on my forum, and would like to know if there are benefits to using SMTP over PHP, or if it is a wash?
    Thanks
    Chris

Yes... SMTP is more secure and allows you offload your email to another server for enhanced performance.

Still true if I use the SMTP server on the same server?

The security part will still be true. Regular email is plain text transmission. SMTP is encrypted. However, a server only has so many resources so you'll just be moving resources from one application to another if you switch to SMTP.
