MAC Addresses?

We review and approve manually all new member registrations. Not always but sometimes when a new user registers in stead of an IP address I'm seeing what looks to be a MAC address. Are these people possibly using a VPN service or anonymous browsing? Or maybe it's device-based, like smartphones or tablets?

Here's an example of the most recent address in the new member's profile (The "x's are mine.) :
