[Forum] "What's New" doesn't really show what's new

    I've upgraded from 4.2.2 to 4.2.5

"What's New" used to show all threads with new activity. Now, when you read the new post, if you re-click on "What's New" that tread is not there anymore. Members complain because of this change. And matter of fact I don't like it either.

Is this expected baviour? And is there a way to change it back to the way it was?

    Thanks

    Yes it's is expected behaviour.

It it sounds like your What's New link points to do=getnew. This is "New Posts" and is supposed to show only new (unread) posts.

Previously there was an option to use "cookie based thread marking" which is obsolete and has been removed. "Database thread marking" is now used. With the New Posts link, once a thread has no new posts, it disappears from the list. This is how it was always intended to work, but cookie based thread marking messes this up. There is no need for cookie based thread marking in the modern age, especially wth people using multiple devices, which would mean they were shown threads they had already read when they switch from one device to another. This is a terrible user experience, and thus the option has been taken out.

If you wish to show both read and unread threads on the same screen, what you need to do is point the link to do=getdaily instead. This is "Today's Posts" and will give you a list of all threads updated in the past 24 hours, unread titles will be in bold.

Thanks for all the info, Mark. Any info of how to do that and recover the old behavior?

Best workaround is to create a second navbar link to "Recent Posts":

        Link to:

        Code:
        search.php?do=getdaily&days=7
Change days=7 to whatever you prefer. That will include read and unread posts.

You cannot recover the old behaviour exactly, because it has been removed. It didn't provide a proper user experience in the modern multi device era. You don't want to log in on a second device to be shown all the same threads you read earlier.

But we do. In my forum we all prefer the old behavior. :/ Now, I read a post, I think I should reply to it a bit later and then later on I need to really look for it to spot it.

Anyway, if you removed it there is little left for us to do.

            thanks for the input djbaxter

Today's Posts (do=getdaily) will do that much more efficiently and you can extend its time period to cover more days, or a week, or a month etc.
It's a better user experience than using a broken version of New Posts because with Today's Posts you will definitely get *everything*. I know this because I've done it this way on my site for about fifteen years....
