My host has been looking into this and reviewing the logs.

If I turn off Ajax, though, what will that do to real time updates of threads and likes, thanks, etc., for the thread?

They will have to refresh the page for most updates. I don't know if the Thanks add-on recognizes that option.

        1. What about General Settings >> Ajax set to Disable problematic AJAX features vs. General Settings >> Ajax set to Disable all AJAX features: What is the difference between those two options?

        2. I just discovered this:

        Code:
        Database server

            Server: Localhost via UNIX socket
            Server type: MariaDB
Server version: 10.2.8-MariaDB - MariaDB Server
            Protocol version: 10
            User: XXXXXXXXX@localhost
            Server charset: UTF-8 Unicode (utf8)

        Database Collation: latin1_swedish_ci
        Is that a problem?

          It wont.
Just randomly changing things that dont really need changing isnt going to work.
Your need proper server monitoring to see if the server has an performance spikes at the time of failures, and trawl all your server logs.

Uh... it wasn't randomly changing things that don't need changing. I was following a suggestion or recommendation by Wayne Luke earlier in this thread.

              1) The first option only disables things that have caused issues based on server configuration and character sets. The second option disables all AJAX. Submitting the post shouldn't be considered problematic but I haven't dug into the code in a long time so don't know all the features affected off the top of my head.

              2) This shouldn't cause a problem unless you're using a double-byte language. It wouldn't cause the issue you're having at the moment.

Determining why the server is lagging at the time of the double posts would be the ultimate fix.

                • Converting to InnoDB didn't help at all. I reverted back to MyISAM.
                • Whether AJAX was enabled or partially or fully disabled didn't make a difference.
                • Numerous other server configuration and vBulletin configuration changes made a small difference but did not resolve the problems.

I am now convinced that the problems are not with my vBulletin setup nor with the VPS configuration but with the database server and how those resources are allocated. I am currently attempting to poke tech support for my host into investigating that and addressing any issues they uncover from the logs.
