Help Needed, forum is down and cannot access admincp or register new users

A few days ago our forum stopped working. Seems that it has been hacked and I request any help or insight you may have.

Here are some of the problems:
    1. Forum not accepting passwords even after resetting a new password
    2. I cannot register any new users. Every time I enter a new username, a message comes saying "Please complete the required field "Username".
    3. I cannot access the admin CP. (see #1)
    4. I have tried to use the tools.php but it's not working (HTTP ERROR 500)
    5. I tried to disable plugin system by adding define('DISABLE_HOOKS', true); to my config.php file
    6. Version 4.2.0 Patch Level 3 is no longer available to download from the members area. I downloaded 4.2.0 Patch Level 4 and compared the files in my forum and I couldn't find any important differences or hacked content in the files.

    Forum information:

vBulletin Version 4.2.0 Patch Level 3
    PHP Version 7.0.22
    MySQL Version 10.1.26-MariaDB

    Thanks in advance!!

For starters, your vBulletin version is not compatible with your php version.

Please upgrade to vBulletin 4.2.5 and see if this fixes your issues.

Thanks for your response. I changed a setting to use a different version of PHP and seems to be almost back to normal.

Now I need to really think about upgrading to version 5.x

        You don't need vB5 for php 7.
The minor upgrade to vB4.2.5 will give you that.

Before undertaking a major upgrade like vB5, make sure you know what features are in vB5 that you need, that aren't in vB4.
Major upgrades with no good reason wreck established communities.

We use a very "vainilla" forum with no major plugins or add-ons I would think that upgrading to vB5 is a no-brainer.

Should I worry when this comment comes from you?

BTW I bought the vB5 license a long time ago but never find the time to do the upgrade.

No, you shouldn't worry at all. It's just a cautonary note. The support team here are all experienced community owners as well as support staff. My advice is to make sure you have a valid reason for upgrading before doing so. Ask yourself why you want to upgrade; if the answer is "to get the latest shiny new version", this is a bad reason.

vB5 is a big, big change from vB4, it has a lot of new and better functionality but there are also features that are in vB4 that were removed in vB5, and other features that are there but work very differently. If you just spring it on your users without warning, expect considerable resistance and demands to "put it back how it was". That's not a vB5 thing, it's a "major software upgrade" thing.

At the very least, you should create a private test mirror of your live site, on its own separate database, and upgrade that first. Then you can see what the live site will look and feel like.

vB5 could be the greatest piece of software ever written (perhaps it is!) and my advice above would still be the same.

Now a NEW community - starting from scratch - vB5 every time!
It's the "change" that is the risk.
Hope I am making some sense.
