[Forum] What is an "Old Mobile Browser" vs "Modern Mobile Browser?"

The options under the Style & Language Settings do not have little help icons next to them explaining what exactly constitutes one vs the other. Is there a master list somewhere? Can those lists be edited in vbulletin?

Personally, I'd like my mobile theme to target all mobile browsers but ignore tablets.

    Thanks in advance.

AdminCP->Settings->Options->Style & Language Settings->Default Style for Modern Mobile Browsers-> Set to 'None' to use desktop browser style.

I think there might be a language barrier here...

I want to target all phones but, I do not want to target iPads and other tablets. Is there a way to edit which devices are affected by the setting?

          - - - Updated - - -

So, if I pull "ipad" out of this line in the init.php that should target all mobile except for the iPad right?

          Code:
          ipad|ipod|iphone|blackberry|android|pre\/|palm os|palm|hiptop|avantgo|plucker|xiino|blazer|elaine|Windows Phone OS|htc
How could I create exceptions for other capable tablets? For example, Surface.

No It won't, a plugin could do that, Ask on vBulletin.org for a modification

Without making any changes to the code - I am using an iPad3 and I do not see the mobile theme. But, I do see the mobile thread on my older iPhone. It seems as though the iPad is currently not targeted?

it would be nice to see an official list of supported devices.

I'd still like to see an official list of what exactly is a "modern mobile browser." I've search around but, I dont see anything anywhere.

I have but, my own iPad is not being targeted so, that list is incorrect. My iPhone is being targeted so, I know the feature is turned on.

Have you previously used the ipad on that site and switched to the non-mobile style in it?

No. And I have cleared my cache.

For the record, I have an iPad 3.

There is something in this, because by default if I view this very site on an iPhone I get the mobile style, whereas on an iPad I get the full style.

This happens as a guest with no cookies (as both devices were new last month), so whether it's by accident or by design, it seems to work well.

The same thing happens at vbulletin.com btw. My phone shows the mobile version but, my iPad3 does not.

It is a happy accident in this one case but, I dont have a hundred devices to make sure they are all working properly. This is why I'd like to see the official list. And I would like to learn more about how they are supported.

What if the glitch gets fixed and all of sudden iPad users start seeing the mobile theme?

Verified that the mobile theme is not served to the iPad2 either.

Quick check in our Tracker shows that it's correct we don't treat the iPad as a mobile device:
