What's his IP address? Do you have root access to the webserver? Why don't you CDIR ban him?

We had made this change in the initial releases of vBulletin 4.X and people complained because it wasn't accurate so the change was reverted. To remove usergroups from the list requires an addon. You can search vBulletin.org to see if such an Addon Exists.

His email addresses are along the lines of [email protected]

        Every new title is new.

I just need unmoderated users to stop appearing in Who's Online.

        It can't be this hard

Like I said in the post above which you seem to have ignored. This requires modifying the code and you need to ask over at www.vbulletin.org. There might even be a pre-packaged addon that does this.

Not ignored. Have spent the time searching for such a mod. Doesn't appear to exist.

To add some recent context, here's today's handle:

No. Should I have? I still need this fixing.

                  You have two options...

                  1) Enter an improvement request in JIRA and hope it gets picked up for a version after 4.2.1

                  2) Enter a request over a vBulletin.org for an addon to do this.

What you want to do isn't possible without editing code and is therefore not supported. It is however a quick code change so someone may just post that at vBulletin.org.
