    [Blog] Tons of SPAM

I'm not sure what's happened, but in the past week, I've been hit with loads and loads and loads of spam on my blog. Generally I get one spam post maybe every week or two, however it's skyrocketed to at least 10 or 20 a day and sometimes as high as 300. Spambots are registering non-stop (which I will have to at some point prune instead of just banning) and these spambots are also starting to hit my forum.

At the moment, I've implemented a few measures to reduce what is visible to the public, since we don't get all that many blog posts, they have to be all approved and most of the spam on the forum is immediately flagged. I thought it might be just a crazy couple of days, but I can't keep banning these guys so I was hoping I could get some help.

    Steps I've taken:
    1. Update to latest vBulletin 4.2.0 Patch 2
    2. Updated my plugins to their latest versions
    3. Tried to change from manual questions to reCAPTCHA (and now back to a different set of questions) for registration

So I'm at my wits end as to what to do. My website is www.DSDatabase.org, it's relatively small so it shouldn't really be a spam magnet. If anyone has any ideas, I really appreciate it! Thanks!

Don't use reCAPTCHA, it is easily compromised. Use the Questions & Answers setting built into vBulletin and make the questions specific to your forum's subject matter. Don't have any "What is 2 + 2?" questions because most bots can now easily handle any math questions.

Go for unique questions that pertain to your forum such as:

What color is the word Database in our logo? Green
What was the name of Mario's brother? Luigi
Which company created the DS? Nintendo

    Stuff like that may help.

I appreciate that but moderating every user is not something I'm keen on doing. It's not only a bit of a workload, but members also like instant access rather than waiting for it.

Also vBulletin has a function against spam at AdminCP -> Options -> Settings -> Spam Management

Everything that helps is good, so if you don't have mass spam anymore when using akismet, it's good.
