Why not place it in a registered only forum and set the permissions for that forum for registered only? Easy enough.
To be or not to be... Where the hell is the question????
My psychiatrist told me I was crazy and I said I want a second opinion. He said okay, you're ugly too

As Merjawy said, to do this with default vBulletin features you need to create a forum that is only visible to registered users and put the thread in there. You can change permissions for a specific forum by going to Admin CP -> Forums & Moderators -> Forum Permissions.

There are also 3rd party mods out there to restrict thread viewing by usergroup if you want to search on vbulletin.org.

Just create a plugin that throws a permission denied or even a custom error message when a non-logged-in user tries to view a specific thread.

Merjawy's and Joe's advice is a simple solution to your request, why do you want to make the task difficult?

vB5 is unequivocally the best forum software, but not yet...
